1. Pipa (lute) solo: “Ambush from Ten Sides,” traditional

(Chinese: 十面埋伏; pinyin: Shi Mian Mai Fu)

Performer: Zhuxi Wang

Highly virtuosic, the work is written in the "Wu" or martial style and tells the story of the Battle of Gaixia in 202 BC, the final showdown between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang, which resulted in Liu Bang’s victory and the establishment of the Han Dynasty.

2. Pipa solo: “The Conqueror Disarms,” traditional

(Chinese: 霸王卸甲; pinyin: Ba Wang Xie Jia)

Performer: Jiayuan Han

A companion piece to “Ambushed,” “The Conqueror Disarms” is an anguished elegy from the viewpoint of Xiang Yu and his men. The music is divided into sixteen sections: from Xiang Yu summoning his soldiers back to the camp, fighting at the battlefield, losing the battle, leaving his concubine, refusing to take the boat to return to his homeland out of shame to his people, and committing suicide by the river.

3. Dizi (flute) solo : “Torrents of Spring”

(Chinese: 春潮; pinyin: Chun Chao)

Performers: Yixiu Yan, Jiena Gu (piano)

The Hezhe national minority is located at the northernmost part of China. Using Hezhe folk sounds, this work pays homage to the springtime floods and their vital role in this hunting-and-fishing culture.

4. Erhu (urheen) solo: “Ballad of North Henan” by Liu Wen Jin

(Chinese: 豫北叙事曲; pinyin: Yu Bei Xu Shi Qu )

Performers: Xin Zhang, Francine Di (piano)

This piece has an introduction and four movements. Derived from music of the northern Henan province, it echoes the many varieties of folk music which are popular in that region. A 1961 graduate of the China Central Academy of Music, Mr. Liu Wen Jin is one of the leading composers of his generation.

5. Chamber music: “Rain Dropping on Banana Leaves”

(Chinese: 雨打芭蕉; pinyin: Yu Da Ba Jiao)

Performers: Traditional Cantonese Instrumental Folk Band

The Cantonese folk music of southern China embodies much of the local color and style. This piece first made its way in “Collection of String Music” in 1921, compiled by Hechou Qiu. The fast short beats in the music symbolize the patter of rain on banana leaves, signaling the celebration of the banana harvest.
